Musée de l'Orangerie
Explore the permanent collection, temporary exibitions and the history of the Orangerie Museum. Constructed in 1852 by the architect Firmin Bourgeois, the Orangerie houses the orange trees from the Jardin des Tuileries. After acting as a warehouse, the Orangerie was annexed by the Ecole des Beaux Arts in 1921 which decided to transform it into an exhibition venue, following the example of the Jeu de Paume.
However, on the initiative of Georges Clemenceau, the Orangerie was entrusted to Claude Monet. The painter then installed his Water Lilies collection, begun in 1914.
Restored in the 60s and at the beginning of the 21st century, the Orangerie has now been returned to its former glory and also hosts temporary exhibitions in addition to the Water Lilies paintings.
